QUICK TIP: Search What's Important

With 6.0, the Search bar is more flexible. You're probably used to searching an artist or title. Without changing anything, you can now also search for a runtime. Even better, you can go to Dataset, Library, Fields and set the Search Bar property to Yes on your fields. You can do this on as many fields as you'd like. When you type something in the Search bar, it will search all the fields you' ve designated. This is great for anyone who needs to find all the places information might be located. For instance, you could put in a few words that might match a title, an audio file or a lyric in your data. This option lets you search the fields that are important to how you work.

New From the MusicMaster Blog...

by Marianne Burkett - MusicMaster has always been innovative in customizable database design. With Version 6, we go a step further allowing the user to designate various keystrokes to call up their most used features. It's called "KeyMapping" and is very simple to set up. Key Mapping is available in Library Maintenance and in the Schedule editor. You can have up to 10 different mapping options in each section.

by Jesus Rodriguez - I bet that at least once you have tuned in to your station and realized you missed an unscheduled position. For example you hear a sweeper into a sweeper or a song segue into a song where there should have been a sweeper.  There's a way you can check you log to prevent that from happening. This past month I have been amazed at how many "wow" responses I have gotten when I pull up the feature that I am going to introduce to you today.

by Dave Tyler - When it comes to my Music Categories there are a lot of fields that are important to me and that I need to see and be able to readily enter information into. However, when viewing some of my Non-Music categories, for instance PSAs, there are fewer fields I need to view. With Version 6, we can now have default layouts for Music and Non-Music categories without having to switch the view manually every time you go into that category.

MusicMaster of the Month

MusicMaster of the Month
MusicMaster on the Move: Mike Mason

Mike has been in radio for nearly 14 years (since July 2nd 2002) and has developed a well-rounded set of skill during this time.

Mike would include: on air announcing, commercial production, commercial copy writing, imaging, music scheduling, programming, promotions, and working with affidavits. Mike is an imaging beast with extensive knowledge of Adobe Audition 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 and CS6, plus Cool Edit. Mason has been fortunate to have worked in a variety of formats, including CHR, Country, Adult AC, Hot AC, Classic Rock, and Classic Hits.

Mike is flexible and willing to relocate in the upper Midwest.

Mason would be best suited to program a CHR or Country station, and can also act as the stations music director. Mike's management style is open-door and he makes himself available 24/7.

As a MusicMaster user, Mike shares "I really love how much control MusicMaster gives me to program my radio station. It's basically a one stop shop. Whatever I want to do, I can do it in MusicMaster! I have learned so much about MusicMaster simply by browsing through the program myself. Dave Tyler has been a huge help in teaching me how to effectively access and use the more difficult features of the software."

Mike is handy with various automation systems, including AudioVault, Prophet/ NexGen, Arrakis Digilink, Arrakis Digilink Extreme, and two different versions of Scott Studios.

Mike adds "The best advice I ever received personally came from a book I read a few years ago, that being: 'The hardest choice, is more times than not, the best choice for you to make.' The best advice I received professionally was from a former general manager of mine who told me 'When you are in charge, be in charge, and instead of treating people the way you wish to be treated, treat them the way they want to be treated. You will get much better results.'"

Some of Mason's mentors would include:

Mark St. John (Consultant for Zapoleon Media Strategies)
Chris Ryan  (Program Director for Star 104 in Erie, PA)
Bob Leighton (CEO of Leighton Broadcasting)
JJ Holiday (Operations Manager for Leighton Broadcasting in St. Cloud, MN)
Matt Senne (General Manager for Winona Radio in Winona, MN)

Musiq 3 in Belgium - Welcome to the MusicMaster Family!

A lot of things have changed at RTBF's classical music network in Brussels lately. The public-service station under the direction of Laetitia Huberti got a major "facelift" during the last few months. New hosts were hired, new shows were launched and ... the music department got MusicMaster!

Musiq 3 now joins its sister stations and the existing MusicMaster Pro's at RTBF,  La Premiere , Vivacité, Classic 21 and Pure FM.

A very warm welcome to Laetitia's team. We wish you a great new year and lots of new listeners. Le classique es partout!

RÚV in Iceland - Thanks for 20 years with MusicMaster!

Time flies! Sometimes you have to do the math twice in order to believe it. Dear friends at RÚV, thank you so much for trusting in MusicMaster over the past two decades!

The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service (RÚV) is used by ninety-five percent of the country's population every week and over seventy-six percent on a daily basis. These levels are one of the highest among Public Service Broadcasters in Europe. RÚV is based in Reykjavik and its radio networks are Rás 1 (Channel 1) - News, weather, current affairs, culture, Rás 2 (Channel 2) - Pop and rock music, Rondó - Classical music and jazz (digital and web only) and Krakkarúv the brand-new web channel for kids.

Those pictured below are already the second and third generation of Music directors at RÚV working with MusicMaster! We feel very grateful.

From the left: Matthias Már Magnússon (Rás 2), Pétur Grétarsson (Rás 1), Bergljót Haraldsdóttir (Rás 1), Jónatan Garðarsson (Rás 1), Sindri Bergmann Þórarinsson (Krakkarúv)

Broadcast Pioneer Personality Profile: Donna Halper

Ask any casual broadcast observer and they'll tell you that Donna Halper is the lady with the hats, the music director who gave RUSH a start in America, the speaker featured so often at conventions. Ask a real radio fan, and you'll meet a true female radio pioneer. Recently, we caught up with this rare broadcasting treasure to ask a few questions. Follow along below to discover her inspiring story and the wisdom she shared  in her interview.

Who is Donna L. Halper?
Donna is a radio historian, consultant, author, educator, mentor, Big Sister, and a special friend and advocate to an angel  with autism. She is author of the first book-length study devoted to the history of women in American broadcasting, Invisible  Stars: A Social History of Women in American Broadcasting.

In late 2008, she completed her fourth book, Icons of Talk: The Media Mouths that Changed America, a history of talk shows; that year, she also had a chapter published in a new book by  Michael C. Keith   called Radio Cultures: The Sound Medium in American Life. In 2010, she had an essay about the impact of  McCarthyism   on broadcasting published in a new encyclopedia, Perspectives in American Social History: Cold War and McCarthy Era. In 2011, she completed a new book for  Arcadia Publishing Boston Radio 1920-2010. In 2014, she completed a revised and expanded second edition of Invisible Stars: A Social History of Women in American Broadcasting.

Discovering Rush
Halper attended  Northeastern University , where she received  B.A. ,  M.A. , and  M.Ed.   degrees. In 1968 she became the first woman announcer at Northeastern's campus radio station, WNEU (now  WRBB ). Halper went on to a career that included twelve years on the air-in  Cleveland ,  New York City ,  Washington, D.C. , and Boston. She was also a music director and gave a number of new bands their start. While working at  WMMS   in Cleveland, Halper discovered the rock band  Rush . Halper was also pivotal in getting them signed to a record contract; as a result, the band dedicated their first two albums to her.   Halper is seen in the 2010 documentary about Rush, Beyond the Lighted Stage. On June 25, 2010, she was a speaker when Rush received a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

A Career in Radio Consulting
In 1980, Halper became a radio consultant, one of the few women to be such. She has consulted for college and commercial radio stations in the United States, eastern Canada and Puerto Rico on various aspects of running a radio station.  Halper also began teaching college courses about broadcasting, media criticism and media history. She has taught at Emerson College, Lesley University (Cambridge, Massachusetts), University of Massachusetts Amherst and University of Massachusetts Boston.  In May 2011, she earned a  Ph.D.   in Communication from UMass Amherst. She has received or been nominated for several teaching awards.

An Expert Historian
A media and social historia n, Halper has written a number of essays for encyclopedias and magazines. She does frequent speaking engagements about the history of broadcasting, bringing with her a collection of rare memorabilia.

She has been a guest expert on  NPR PBS , the  History Channel , and on local television stations  WCVB-TV   and  NECN , commenting on media history.  Her expertise is in women and minorities in media history, t alk radio , and individual entrepreneurs whose contributions to broadcasting have been overlooked. Among the forgotten broadcast pioneers whose careers she has researched are  John Shepard III Eunice Randall , and  Big Brother Bob Emery

Some of her other essays can be found on The Archives @ BostonRadio.org, where she is a contributing editor.  In her spare time, she collects rare magazines and artifacts about media history, as well as stamps and old postcards.
