Ready Check verifies that a log is ready for air based on criteria you provide. The Merge Songs tool allows you to combine copies of a song without losing history or other data. A new Live365 Connect interface simplifies setup for Live365 broadcasters.

A new permission system makes it easier to set up and manage user roles. Schedule sharing between stations can now take special programming into account. We've also added additional compliance reporting for international licensing organizations.

In MusicMaster Nexus Integration...
Additional features are available for real-time integration between MusicMaster and third party systems, such as the ability to push song and schedule changes to external systems automatically. VP/CTO Scott Wirt Celebrates 30 Years at MusicMaster!

This month marks a major milestone at MusicMaster: our Vice President and CTO Scott Wirt is celebrating 30 years with the company! President/Founder Joe Knapp sums our feelings up perfectly when he says, "Scott was the first person I hired to help me with MusicMaster back in 1988 and he's never managed to find a better job. Thank God!"

Always a fan of radio, Scott grew up listening to and recording broadcasts from American Top 40, Paul Harvey and Doctor Demento. Once he discovered short wave radio, he spent many late nights searching for stations from all around the world, sending in listening reports and collecting QSL cards and other memorabilia. He even hosted pretend radio shows with friends, always hoping to be on the air for real one day. That day came in high school, when during a visit with friends to a college radio station, Scott saw a memo on the wall asking for someone to cover a one day special air shift at WOKY-AM. Scott applied and got the gig. This lead to a regular weekly air shift at that station and eventually a full-time job at WISN-AM/WLTQ-FM in Milwaukee, where Scott took on many roles including air shifts, news reports, live remotes, maintaining the station music library, producing a morning talk show and more. He moved up to Music Director and assistant to the Program Director, all before the age of 18.

Scott, just starting out in radio at WOKY in Milwaukee

During this time, Scott was also learning computer programming and using these skills for various projects at the radio station and for a family business. Early in the process of designing a music scheduling system to replace programming received from a satellite service, Scott met Joe Knapp and decided to use his system instead. At that time, it was on the market as MusicScan.

Looking back, Joe shares, “From the first moment I met Scott, I recognized that he was a true genius.” Soon, Joe had asked Scott to team up with him at MusicScan and they opened the first offices of “A-Ware Software” in New Berlin, WI in 1988. Scott began supporting and working on MusicMaster for DOS. Later, he created the Windows version of MusicMaster, and as the company grew even further, he designed and built a team to create MusicMaster Client-Server. Thirty years later, Scott continues to work on designing and programming the MusicMaster software products and managing his team of developers.

According to Joe, "Scott is our nuclear weapon. He's a brilliant systems analyst and code writer who also has radio programming in his DNA. That makes an incredible combination! Over ten thousand MusicMaster users benefit from Scott's genius every day, some without even knowing him." On a personal level, Joe calls Scott his “mutual muse” and says - “He’s like my son from another mother and father.”

Scott loves visiting with clients and working to turn their ideas and wishes into reality. He encourages users to learn and use new technology, including the latest MusicMaster features, to continue improving your stations and keeping them fresh. He says: "We build in ideas from some of the greatest minds in the business and share them with all of our clients."

As Joe concludes - Scott's impact at MusicMaster extends far beyond his programming. "If you need to make anything better - just ask Scott!" he says. So we thank you, Scott, for 30 years of making things better - not only for us, but also for thousands of radio stations around the world!

Celebrating 30 sweet years with Scott!

  Quick Tip

Current Category or Schedule Category?

When you schedule a log, the song is in the category you expect. What happens a week later, though, when you go back to review something? With category moves you might make, the song could be in a different category, making you wonder how it got scheduled in a specific position. If you add the "Schedule: Category" field to your Editor display, you will know what category the song was in when it scheduled. The Category field will tell where the song is now. Using "Schedule: Category" will eliminate any confusion you have about how your log was scheduled.

Cloning Clocks and Grids

by Paul Ziino - You've cloned your database and want to get busy working on a bunch of new clocks. The structure of the clocks will remain, but with new element types and some cool new features. Is there a way to clone all my active clocks?

Go to Dataset/Clocks/Assignment Grids. Highlight the grid you wish to clone then click the Copy button. Now you'll be able to give this new grid a unique description as well as make copies of all the clocks. You can also tell MusicMaster with what character you want those clock copies to begin.

Click OK and you'll have an exact copy of each clock from the original grid, now assigned to that cloned grid. To edit the clocks, open the new assignment grid, then double-click on the clocks within to make your changes. Don't forget to save the changes after you've completed your new clocks!

MusicMaster Field Names

by Dave Tyler-Around the MusicMaster headquarters we are proud to talk about how MusicMaster is the only music scheduling software that allows you to create a custom database! That’s a big deal. I have programmed radio stations for more than 30 years and I have used most of the popular schedulers at one point or another. You know one thing that used to drive me crazy? Tabbing! Especially tabbing past fields I don’t even use to get to ones I do. MusicMaster allows you to set up your layout so you only have the fields you actually use in your view, but MusicMaster goes way past that with customization! You can even rename the fields anything you want.

In the following example I am going to exaggerate a bit. I am not recommending you actually change your field names to the examples, but I am showing that you could if you wanted to. Let's say there are three fields that are driving you nuts: your Artist, Title and Energy fields. You wish they were called Singer, Song Name & NRG (because that looks cool!). Here's how you would change it...

Pete de Graaff

Operations Manager and Dir. of Branding and Programming for Cox Media - Athens, GA

A MusicMaster user for almost 13 years, Pete de Graaff is the Operations Manager for Cox stations in Athens, Georgia, including: WNGC/WTSH 106.1/107.1 Your Georgia Country, WKXT 103.7 Chuck FM, and WPUP Power 100.1. He is also the Director of Branding and Programming for WGMG Magic 102.1.

Pete recalled his experience when first switching to MusicMaster: "I was always hesitant early on, but solid nurturing and good coaching by the MusicMaster masters, plus the ease of use early on made me a quick fan." As for his continued MusicMaster education, Pete shared, "We recently attended the MusicMaster Genius Day in Atlanta and it was a game changer for us. Many things were basic but as they approached things we didn’t know and uses that were more complex, we realized how much easier our life could be. Got MusicMaster MSC Jerry Butler on the phone and he knew exactly what I was looking to do as I communicated to him in 'PD-speak'."

When asked what he loves most about MusicMaster, Pete said, "The game changer for us as we focus our music has been the special sets. Now we don’t have to spend so much time scheduling sweepers and we can spend more time massaging the music log—which is close to perfect, to begin with."

He added, "I have worked in New York, Boston, Orlando, West Palm, Vero Beach and now Athens, Georgia. Way back, I learned how to program by hand using notecards. It seems our systems have come a long way while still sticking to the basics of what makes music programming fun, challenging and rewarding. Whoever designed MusicMaster initially I’m sure had all this in mind."

Malcolm Sinclair

Sales and Marketing - Whitby, ON

For almost 16 years, Malcolm Sinclair (under his company Sinclair Media Inc.) has been a powerful force behind MusicMaster Sales and Marketing in Canada and the United States. Malcolm shares: “My favorite thing about working with MusicMaster has to be working with the amazing people in the business, helping to find solutions to their questions and challenges, and training new and young broadcasters. I get to work as a partner with incredibly talented people and, in my own small way, offer some guidance so they can give the listener or viewer a top quality product.”

Malcolm graduated Valedictorian from Fanshawe College in London, Ontario, and went on to work at CKSL when it was CHR. He then moved to 570 CHYM in Kitchener and then off to Toronto where he finished his on-air career as the afternoon jock at Country 59. Moving to a programming position with The Wolf/KRUZ in Peterborough, he worked his way up to Regional PD with Power Broadcasting Ontario and left the corporate world a couple of years after they were purchased by Corus to venture out on his own. While in Toronto, he got to work with some incredible talent like Mike Cooper, Terry Steele and the legendary Rosalie Trembley, the lady who ran The Big 8 (CKLW Windsor) music list and broke artists like Elton John, Bob Seger and The Guess Who to the world. Today, Malcolm continues to provide voice talent for some major broadcasting operations both in TV and Radio stations in the great white north!

When asked what advice he would give to new young broadcasters, Malcolm said, “Be a sponge. Look at everything as a learning experience. Know as much as you can about every department in a station and don’t be afraid to offer your thoughts in a meeting. Radio is doing more with less, so be part of the solution. Find mentors outside of your own building and pick their brains. Never stop learning.” Malcolm has been happily married to his wonderful wife for almost 27 years with 2 beautiful daughters aged 23 and 18. His secret? “Don’t put anything in the dryer without permission.”
