Technical Requirements Update

As of Jan 1, 2024, MusicMaster will only support installations on Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016 and later, and when SQL Server is used, only SQL Server 2016 or later. This is primarily due to Microsoft end-of-life support policies for their older products. If you have any questions or concerns about this change, please contact MusicMaster support.

“Who Did That?” Tracking Schedule Editor Changes

by Paul Ziino

Looking at the Schedule Editor, have you ever wondered “Who did that?” Here is a quick and easy way to find out.

First, you need to make sure that Dataset Security is turned on under Tools/Options/Dataset Security (as well as Users and Rights). This means each user will have a unique username and password for logging into the database. Once that is done, you can see who has made changes and when within the schedule editor.

There are three fields you’ll want to add to your Schedule Editor view: Schedule:Manual, Schedule:Changed By, and Schedule:Last Change.

Now that your fields have been added to the view, you can see that Schedule:Changed By will tell us who made the last edit in the hour. Schedule:Last Change tells us when that edit was made. In the Schedule:Manual field, you will see a capital M on any position that was edited (not scheduled by the automatic scheduler).

You need to display Hour Headers via the Show/Hide Elements icon in order to see the Changed By and Last Change field information.

Here we see Tom made the last changes at 3:28pm.

In the next picture, we see that Cindy made the most recent changes to the hour.

There’s also a handy feature to see what changes were made between the time you exported your log vs. the time your log was reconciled. You can do so with the History Snapshot.

At any time in the Schedule Editor, you are able to create a snapshot of the log by clicking the camera icon to Compare current history to a saved snapshot.

The first time you click the icon in a schedule you’ll create that snapshot. You can also set MusicMaster to automatically create a snapshot upon export.

Once the snapshot is created, you can compare it to the log as it stands by clicking that camera icon in the schedule editor again. Then click Compare. Your display will allow you to Show All, Show Changed items, or Show Unchanged items. Here’s a sample of the Changed Items. Note, hours with no changes will just display hour headers in this view.

A New Way to Sort Your Library

by Paul Ziino

Starting in MusicMaster Pro 8.0.11, you can change the default sort order of your library when you open categories via the Info Bar. By default, MusicMaster’s library sorts by Song ID, the internal number that keeps track of your songs. Song ID started at 1 with the first song added. The second song added was 2, and so on. Once a song is deleted, its Song ID is never repeated in the library.

With this new feature, you can change that default sort order. If you’d rather your library opens alphabetically by Artist or by Title, you can make that adjustment. Go to Tools/Options and under Library Editor Options you’ll find Library Layout Defaults. Here you can pick a different field (instead of Song ID) for the Library Maintenance Default Sort Field.

If you leave the setting at [None] there will be no change. But if you change it to Artist, now when you double-click a category from the Info Bar list, that category will open sorted as you’ve indicated. Maybe you want the library to sort by Title? Or what about by your automation asset code? Or any other field in your data. Whatever you desire, you can set it.

  Quick Tip

Navigating the Scheduling Calendar

The detailed Scheduling Calendar introduced in Version 7 is your one-stop shop to see everything going on with your scheduling operations. By clicking Customize on the calendar itself, you can add badges to indicate what tasks have been completed for each day or how much they've progressed - even down to the hour level. (If you don't see the Hour panel, drag it open from the right side of your screen. Or, click the Wrench icon and check on the option to have the Hour Panel open by default). And by customizing the bottom Operations Toolbar, you can add buttons to quickly launch operations for the selected day (such as AutoSchedule, Export to Automation, Reconcile, and more).

There are also a few handy ways to navigate through the calendar. Of course, you can use the right and left arrows on the upper right to move month-by-month. But if you need to move farther in time, you can click the date header (i.e. the current Month and Year) and open a dropdown to pick a new month and year. On the upper right, you'll also see text indicating the last date and time scheduled. Clicking on that will move to that date in the calendar. If you want to open the Schedule Editor (or perform any other operation) on a specific hour in the day, you can double click that hour in the right-hand Hour Panel. Last but not least, if you need to quickly jump to Today's Date, click the calendar icon on the top-left (next to the wrench.)

Highlights of the Public Radio Program Directors Conference

Jill Sorenson attended the Public Radio Program Directors (PRPD) Content Conference in Philadelphia at the end of September. She met with over two dozen current MusicMaster users and several participants who are interested in getting MusicMaster for their stations. Sessions included results of recent surveys, format-specific meetings and engaging your audience in different mediums. "One of the take-aways was to meet your audience where they are," Jill said. We couldn't agree more. Thanks to everyone at the PRPD for another great conference!

Michael Toulouse - Program Director, Classical Music Indy

Michael Toulouse is the program director for Classical Music Indy, Central Indiana's premier provider of classical music syndicated programming, podcasts, and community programs. Michael co-produces and co-hosts Anytime Classical, a 24-hour classical music radio service, which is currently broadcast on listener-supported stations in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest. Michael commented, "While it would probably be unwise to single out a "favorite" among the many stations we serve, it has been our privilege to provide classical music to the listeners of WICR in Indianapolis since 1983. That station, like many others in our system, provides high-quality alternative programming to audiences who are eager to hear it--and who gladly support it through their annual donations."

Michael started working in radio in 1987, after graduating from college with a BA in music literature. Aside from a six-year stint in computer programming during the "dot-com" era, he has worked as a classical music radio host ever since. Michael shared, "I have been lucky to meet and interview some true classical music stars--such as pianist Stephen Hough, baritone Thomas Hampson, and violinists Hilary Hahn and Joshua Bell. Those were fun conversations! (Yet I will never forget the time a listener called the station and kindly suggested to me that he would rather have just listened to the music.)"

When asked about his experience with MusicMaster, Michael recalled, "After quite a bit of prodding from a co-worker with a degree in Library Science, I switched our shop to MusicMaster in 2018. The transition was unbelievably smooth, with fantastic support from Paul Ziino and his team. I was nervous about integrating MusicMaster with Blurve, the software I wrote to manage our on-air copy, but thanks to the Nexus architecture we didn't lose a single record. The Nexus server is a fantastic aid in systems integration. I would recommend it to anyone who needs to export scheduling data."

Nexus and the Blurve updater in action

Michael also added, "MusicMaster's "Attribute-Multiple" field has also been especially helpful in recent years. After some coaching from Jill Sorenson (and my colleague Suzanne Bona), we have used that field to sift through our data and highlight many neglected compositions and recordings by women and people of color. That's remarkable in a field as steeped in tradition as classical music!"
