In this blog post we will take a journey like a storybook does to meet the Rule Wizard who is always available to help us in a time of need. We often get calls asking why certain rules are not functioning properly. Are my rules to tight? May be to loose? Do I have the right times set for my rules? I just did a new database what rules should I use? I inherited a database but I don’t know if the person before me had the correct rules? This year we had a nice stand at Broadcast Asia in Singapore in cooperation with our friends from Wedel Soft, NewsBoss, and Stirlitz. The show was great and we want to thank all of you who came to visit us. We had a great time.
The only draw back was the all-time high PSI level of 421 which made Singapore invisible for nearly the whole week. The fires on Sumatra blew all smoke over to Singapore which then had a very unhealthy haze all over.

Keith Hill, The UnConsultant, has been successfully helping radio stations raise their ratings since 1992 when he teamed up with Moon Mullins of Pollack/Mullins Nashville as a consultant specializing in country. Keith now consults from his base in Texas and serves numerous formats, including 70s and adult contemporary as well as country, his specialty. Keith is well known as the world’s leading authority on music scheduling along with his well developed programming skills.
When asked what “UnConsultant” means, Keith replies, “I do it differently. I look at radio stations holistically, and all advice is custom. I never offer cookie cutter advice.” His client stations are consistent winners, frequently attaining the number one position in their market under his consultation. Keith has worked in radio for over 25 years and has held programming and operations positions at numerous stations including WMYI FM Greenville, SC where he brought the station from launch to number one in just two books. He has also successfully grown ratings at WOJY, Greensboro, NC; WKJY, Long Island, NY; WMID, Atlantic City, NJ; WMXN, Norfolk, VA; and, KHEY, El Paso, TX. Keith also was an air personality at the Legendary WFIL, Philadelphia as well as WXTU, Philadelphia and WYNY, New York. Keith holds a B.S. in TV/Radio and a B.A. in Political Science from Syracuse University.

Quick Tip: Add Variety to MusicSure, you can change the music in your database to add variety, but have you ever considered changing the kind of clock element you use? If you use Fixed positions, you get a song from the same category at the same time. If you used a Proportional position, you could set percentages for each category determining how often the category will schedule over time. This means that the position wouldn’t necessary come from the same category every time. Of course, what you see will depend on the number of categories you include and the percentages you set, but you’ll add some variety in your positions.

The latest service release for MusicMaster is now available. Go to Help, Check for Update to get 5.0sr7. This service release contains new options for exporting your log. You can now toggle between CTRL-ALT-D to see three different modes: date only, date/hour and date/time where you can pick a specific start and/or end for the export in the middle of the hour. Also included are a couple of enhancements to the purging of history and lognotes. In both, you will have the ability to manually set a new “Last Scheduled Date”, The history purge option will be useful to stations that rarely or ever run the automatic scheduler. The lognote purge will be useful to stations that have a large active history window and create unique lognotes in the Editor. Finally, you’ll be able to turn off the color and/or the icons that are displayed on the Scheduling Calendar with new settings in Tools, Options, Additional Properties. We’re proud to announce the addition of Shane Finch as the new MusicMaster Sales Director. He comes to us from Asterisk Communications in Ocala, Florida, where he has been the Operations Director for WTRS and WMFQ since 1995, and also hosted the midday show on 92Q.
His track record also includes some great radio stations, such as Operations Director for WDEZ and WRIG in Wausau, Wisconsin. Before that he put his magic touch on several stations in Des Moines, Iowa, as Promotions Director for KIOA, Account Executive at KDMG in Des Moines, Music Director at KRNQ, Program Director at KXLQ, and more. Throughout his impressive radio career Shane has been on the air as well. He will fit right in to the MusicMaster family!
MusicMaster is also adding Melanie Ross as Director of Marketing. Her experience in retail sales management and brand support are a welcome addition to our team. You may soon hear from her as she intends to make contact with every MusicMaster user to make sure they are completely satisfied with our products and services. Our Training Library contains short-form walkthroughs and long-form webinars on all aspects of the program. The walkthroughs are all designed to be very short so you can get the information you need quickly. Most are only a couple of minutes long. The webinars are more in-depth looks at various topics. We’ve added a new webinar that explains the difference between Clock Filters and Scheduling Filters. Quick Tip: Sorting in the LibraryYou probably know you can click on any header to sort your library. Clicking again sorts in the opposite order. Did you know there are other kinds of sorts you can do? If you right-click on the header, select Arrange List and you’ll find six more ways you can sort the library, including by Rest and Schedule Order.
